YOUR GUIDE TO DISHWASHERS:
WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN SHOPPING FOR A DISHWASHER
People usually look for certain elements in a new dishwasher. These typically include an appropriate size, a style that fits their kitchen and features that mesh with their lifestyle.
The market consists of a range of dishwasher options so you need to find the right match for your needs. Some people start the process by asking themselves what’s most important? Is style the main priority? Does versatility matter?
It’s your kitchen so it’s your choice.
- What’s your budget?
- How much room do you have?
- What is your preferred style?
- What is the typical size of your wash loads?
- How much does noise level matter to you?
The majority of built-in residential dishwashers are either 18” or 24”. It’s important to accurately measure the space before committing to a new dishwasher.
Style and performance will probably top most wishlists, but condo and apartment owners may also want to pay close attention to a dishwasher’s noise level.
A small kitchen might not require a small dishwasher. Instead, what you might want to consider is the space between rooms. For example, if your kitchen is close to your family room, the noise level of your dishwasher could dictate whether you can hear your TV at certain volumes.
For kitchens in close proximity to rooms where you'll be entertaining or relaxing, you could consider quieter models that are under 50 dBA. You’ll have plenty of options to choose from.
The noise level of a dishwasher is calculated in decibel levels (dBA). The main thing to know is that the higher the decibel level, the noisier the dishwasher.
A 1 dBA difference isn’t noticeable to most people. It typically takes a difference of 3 dBA before the human ear perceives a difference. A 40 dBA and below rating may be practically silent while in operation, while ratings of 50 and higher could produce a higher noise level similar to a normal conversation.
HOW TO CHOOSE AN EXTERIOR STYLE?
For some, a dishwasher’s exterior style is an opportunity to complement the existing design of their kitchen. You can select from several options: Console, Pocket, Towel Bar, Panel-Ready and Semi-Integrated. To help narrow your style choices, consider these questions:
- Do you want a uniform look for your dishwasher and cabinets?
- Do you want the controls to be hidden?
- Do you like the idea of a recessed handle or a towel bar?
Semi-Integrated: The controls are visible, accessible and flush with the door.
The cycle process is displayed via exterior status lights.
Fully-Integrated Dishwashers: The controls are hidden from view.
Owners receive immediate feedback via status lights that feature an exterior cycle indicator with changing colours.
Finishes
Traditionally, options for finishes were limited to black, white or stainless steel. Nowadays, options have expanded to include fingerprint resistant stainless steel, black stainless steel or you can even customize cabinets to match an existing kitchen design.
What Does Panel-Ready Mean?
Custom panel-ready dishwashers feature an unfinished door, allowing you to match your appliance to your cabinetry. This can help kitchens achieve a cohesive look.
HOW TO CHOOSE A DISHWASHER INTERIOR?
How the interior of a dishwasher is configured can determine how items are loaded. When deciding on which interior is best for you, you may want to consider your household size, if you own awkwardly shaped items and how often you entertain guests.
Dishwasher interiors are made of either plastic, stainless steel or a combination of these two materials.
Plastic tubs can be less expensive although they are considered the noisier option.
Stainless Steel tubs may be better suited to resisting stains, are considered to be quieter and can handle higher drying temperatures.
Hybrid interiors combine plastic and stainless steel.
Maytag does not carry dishwasher models with plastic or Hybrid tubs.
Built-in dishwashers are defined by being permanently installed into the structure of an existing kitchen.
Portable dishwashers are for kitchens that may not have adequate space for a built-in or countertop model. A portable dishwasher can be placed in or removed from a kitchen whenever needed.
Countertop dishwashers are designed to fit on top of a variety of counter spaces. Some may consider them to be a good option for condos or small kitchens.

- 24” width can be an attractive option for families or for those who have frequent wash loads.
- 18” width can be a good choice for smaller kitchens or for those who use their dishwasher less frequently.
- Tall Tub configuration is designed to accommodate taller items.
- Built-in dishwashers can usually fit underneath counters and between cabinets for a harmonious look.
- Some built-in models are panel-ready, meaning they can be customized to match cabinetry.
- All of these dishwashers require permanent plumbing installation.
The safest approach is to have a trained and certified technician perform every step of the installation.
It’s recommended to confirm that your home’s electrical output has every installation requirement. This can include a grounded electrical outlet (no extension cord or adapter) and a dedicated 15 amp circuit.
Refer to the specific dishwasher’s Use & Care Guide for additional installation requirements and guidelines.
What is the cost of installation?

DOES MY DISHWASHER NEED TO BE THE SAME BRAND AS MY OTHER APPLIANCES?
The short answer is no but there may be some benefits to purchasing several appliances from one brand. For instance, handles, finishes and aesthetics may have a better chance of matching, which could result in a cohesive design for your kitchen.
Heavy & Targeted Wash Zones: Dishwashers with a heavy wash zone feature a spray zone to aggressively target and clean heavily soiled dishes and awkwardly shaped items.
Water Coverage:
Features can include flexible wash arms and bottle wash sprays. This may provide better wash coverage.
Filtered-based systems:
These systems generally minimize the sound output and are better equipped to optimize water and energy conservation.
Cycle options:
Certain models may offer a customizable option so that washing is performed based on your wash load. This can potentially cater to more delicate items like china and crystal in an effort to preserve them.
Commonly, people use dishwashers to clean plates, cups and cutlery. Sometimes, though, they might need to wash items like wine glasses, fine china, chopsticks or platters.
Some dishwashers are built with features to improve loading capacity and versatility:
Adjustable/Flexible Racks:
These racks can be moved into different positions inside the dishwasher. This allows owners to customize a wash, including the ability to load large or oddly shaped items.
Third Level Racking:
This rack can be used to wash items like cutlery, spatulas and chopsticks.
Silverware Baskets:
This is a dedicated compartment for flatware.
Think about how much flexibility and capacity you might need. Then you can decide if you want removable racks and/or fold down tines to accommodate pots and pans of varying sizes and/or stemware holders for wine glasses and champagne flutes.
Tub Material: Stainless steel can retain heat from the wash cycle to help ensure more efficient drying.
Fan Assisted Dry: This feature utilizes a fan to accelerate drying performance by replacing humid air with room temperature air. Premium dishwashers typically have this feature.
Heated Dry: This helps ensure your dishes are “cabinet dry” after the wash cycle. Please note that this feature’s typical default setting is “on”. This is a manual option, giving owners the choice of turning it off.
Certain dishwashers can wirelessly connect to the internet. This allows the appliance to provide data, download additional cycles, monitor the time left on a cycle and could eventually include voice compatibility. Please be advised that features vary and may be subject to change.

Different Dishwasher Cycles
The typical dishwasher usually has two wash cycles: normal and light.
Many dishwasher models offer some or all of the following cycles: Quick Wash, Rinse & Hold, Steam, Delicate Wash, Heavy Duty and Sanitize.
Certain dishwashers are designed with additional cycle variety. These could include such options as ultra-quick for less dirty items, a top-rack-only for glassware and a heavy duty option for pots and pans.

SOIL SENSORS
This feature, also known as turbidity sensors, monitors the level of tiny substance particles that might exist in the wash water. It enables a dishwasher to recognize when items are heavily soiled and adjust the cycle time to help optimize performance.
DELAYED START
Most dishwashers can delay a wash cycle from starting. This means your dishwasher can start between 2-, 4-, 6- or 8-hours after it’s been loaded.
This allows you to run your dishwasher while you’re busy doing other things or during off-peak hours whether you’re home or not.
FILTERS
Filters help prevent food from reattaching onto dishes and other items during a wash. Dishwashers usually have a self-cleaning or manual filter.
Manual filters are considered to be the quieter option, but they typically require regular manual cleaning. Certain self-cleaning systems use a grinder to pulverize and then discard debris. Other systems increase the motor power to discard debris and keep filters clean in the process.
